How Individual Therapy Works
The therapy I offer is psychodynamic in nature. It focuses on understanding the relationships you have with yourself and with others, and how these influence or guide your life experiences. Usually, this therapy is longer-term or open-ended, however, briefer treatment can be negotiated.
Individual Therapy consists of 55-minute, one-on-one sessions. In addition to listening, I will ask questions and share thoughts when it’s helpful. Here’s how it will work step-by-step:
1First, I provide a safe, accepting space so that you will feel comfortable sharing your struggles with me.
2I’ll ask you what your hopes are for individual therapy.
3Through hearing your story, I will start to get a picture of what your challenges are.
4Together, we’ll start identifying the unhelpful patterns you’re caught in.
5Keeping your hopes for therapy in mind, we’ll start to work out what’s needed to help you reach them.
6During therapy, parts previously in your unconscious will be made conscious, creating new opportunities for relating to yourself and others.
